1. Overview

Privacy Act 1988 Reference is an offline reference app that helps you quickly look up general information about Australia’s Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), with an option to open the full Act in your browser and an optional voice-query feature (In-App Purchase). This policy explains what data the app does and does not collect, how it is used, and your choices.

We keep things simple: the app is designed to work without collecting personal data.

2. What we do not collect

  • No account creation or login
  • No name, email, phone, identifiers, or contact list
  • No location data
  • No advertising identifiers
  • No analytics SDKs or third-party trackers
  • No server logs from app usage (the app works offline)

3. Data processed on your device

  • Your searches, reading history, and settings (language, UI preferences) are processed locally on your device and are not sent to our servers.
  • If you clear the app or delete it, this local data is removed by iOS as part of the uninstall/reset process.

4. Features that may involve Apple or other third parties

4.1 In-App Purchases (Apple)

Purchases are processed by Apple. We do not receive your full payment details. Apple may provide us limited receipts necessary to unlock features. Apple’s handling of your data is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.

4.2 Voice Queries (optional feature)

If you enable the voice feature, the app uses iOS speech recognition (SFSpeechRecognizer). Depending on device and system settings, audio or transcripts may be sent to Apple to perform recognition. We do not receive or store your audio. Review your iOS settings and Apple’s privacy policy for details.

4.3 Opening the full Act in your browser

When you tap to view the full Act, your device opens an external website (e.g., the Federal Register of Legislation). Your use of external sites is governed by those sites’ own terms and privacy policies. We do not control or monitor those sites.

4.4 Crash reports and diagnostics (Apple)

If you have opted in at the system level to share analytics with developers, Apple may provide us anonymised crash logs and performance data. We use these only to improve stability and do not attempt to identify you.

5. How we use data

  • Operate core functions (local search, navigation, settings) on-device
  • Validate purchases (via Apple receipts)
  • Improve stability and performance (via anonymised crash logs if you opted in with Apple)

We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not build user profiles.

6. Data retention

  • On-device data (settings, cached references) stays on your device until you clear it or uninstall the app.
  • Purchase receipts kept as required for feature entitlement and compliance.
  • Crash logs are retained per Apple’s standard retention and our internal troubleshooting needs.

7. Security

  • The app minimises data flows by working offline.
  • Where data must pass through Apple (payments, speech recognition), transport security is provided by iOS and Apple’s services.

8. Your choices

  • Use the app entirely offline without voice features.
  • Do not grant microphone permission if you do not want to use voice queries.
  • Manage Apple analytics/crash sharing in iOS Settings.
  • Delete the app to remove on-device data.

9. Children

This app is a general reference tool and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. International use

We do not transfer your personal information to our own servers. When opening external legal websites or using Apple services (purchases, speech), data handling may occur under those providers’ global infrastructure and policies.

11. Your rights (Australia)

If you contact us and voluntarily provide personal information (e.g., via email support), you may request access to or correction of that information. Contact: zhan@aotol.com.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect app changes or legal requirements. The “Effective date” will be updated. Significant changes will be noted in the app release notes or within the app’s About/Settings page.
